Mrs. Volz’s STEM class has been learning about natural vs synthetic polymers. They had the opportunity to learn about the science behind these natural polymers, and then they got to build their own natural polymer out of sodium alginate, a type of seaweed! They experimented with different combinations of household texture substances (aloe vera, pancake syrup, honey, and corn syrup), various coloring agents (Kool-aid powder, food coloring, and fruit juices), and the sodium alginate to create the strongest polymer. It was a hands-on, creative, and sometimes messy adventure in chemistry!
