BLUE EARTH AREA SCHOOLS TO HOLD REFERENDUM INFORMATION MEETING

Voters in the Blue Earth Area School district will be asked again on August 11 to consider two bond referendum questions to address the district’s facility needs. Question One will ask voters for $63,310,000 for construction of a new PreK-6 elementary school facility while the second question will ask voters for $10,300,000 for construction and equipping of a multi-purpose space at the new elementary school site and needed HVAC updates at the High School. The passage of Question Two is contingent upon the approval of Question One.

The District is hosting an informational meeting on Thursday, May 28th at Pemberton Gym starting at 5:30 p.m. where voters can visit with the members of the Board, ask questions about the upcoming referendum, and take a tour of the current PreK-7 school. The gym is located at Blue Earth PreK-7 School, 315 6th Street, Blue Earth.
“The bond referendum will allow our District to continue to provide excellent programming to meet the needs of students and our community. Prioritizing a secure entrance, spaces that meet ADA accessibility, updated classrooms, flexible learning spaces for project-based learning, energy efficient building systems, and right sizing the new elementary school for more efficient operating expenses is our goal,” shares Blue Earth Area Schools Superintendent, Mandy Fletcher. “Blue Earth Area Schools is doing great things for kids and this referendum is a commitment to maintaining that high standard.”
This isn’t the first time the District has asked voters to consider an investment in its schools. The needs have not gone away, and these projects are critical to the District’s long-term success. Unfortunately, the only way a school district can address major building needs is through a voter-approved referendum. The PK-7 school has sections that are nearly 100 years old, and the District has been battling failing build systems, broken pipes, and accessibility challenges. The District hired consultants to assess the existing building to see if a renovation was feasible. The study found that the age, structural challenges, and layout do not make it cost effective to renovate the existing school. Findings from the study can be found on the District’s website: https://www.beaschools.org/page/referendum-information.

Our 10th graders attended the ACE (Area Career Exploration) event yesterday at the Fairmont High School! ACE brings together more than 600 sophomores from 12 area schools and over 100 local businesses for a day focused on career awareness, hands-on learning, and workforce development.

Students explored a wide variety of career pathways, connected with industry professionals, asked great questions, and gained valuable insight into the many opportunities that await them after high school.

A big thank you to all of the local businesses who shared their time and expertise, and to the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce for helping make this event possible. Your support plays a huge role in preparing our students for the future!
